The TopRail suite of vehicle restraint systems offer a unique barrier profile which differs from the traditional ‘W’ beam which is used widely across the UK. Still tested and approved to the necessary industry standards, the TopRail systems provide a cost-effective alternative without compromising on safety.

Replacing the traditional ‘W’ beam, the TopRail features a ‘U’ Shaped section that comfortable sits on top of steel ‘C’ section posts. With brackets in place to provide stability, the TopRail suite of solutions can be installed in both central reservation and verge applications, dramatically improving the versatility of the product.

The wider post centres help cut whole-life cycle costs by reducing materials and installation time. Depending on the scheme, this can result in substantial savings and can also reduce the associated carbon footprint by around half compared to traditional double-sided systems. The TopRail family is tested to EN1317 with a containment class of L1. This dual-tested approach means both N2 and H1 containment classes are met. The TopRail also have two tested and approved transitions enabling customers to freely connect into N2 and H2 double sided ‘W’ beam arrangements.

These end terminals are crucial for minimising the risk of severe injuries and vehicle damage in the event of a collision. Complementing our range of VRS system we offer P1, P2 and P4 fully tested end terminal solutions.

In addition to this we can also offer the Non- Proprietary TCB & OBB end terminals which are deemed acceptable for use on the Highways England Trunk Road Network on roads with a speed limit less than 50 mph. In addition, the terminals can be used on the departure end of safety barriers where the terminal does not face oncoming traffic, and the speed limit is 50mph or more

P1 Terminals
For use on roads with a speed limit of less than 50mph, or departure ends on roads above 50mph (see CD 377 for guidance).

From fishtails to end shoes and from corners and radius beams, Brackmore Barriers are able to manufacture and supply a variety of different beam and end types.

Brackmore Barriers are now manufacturing and supplying Armco Bollards; the only alternative when pedestrian perforation is deemed essential.

Varley and Gulliver supplies quality cast-in anchorages, ensuring that road crash barriers perform effectively and provide maximum protection in the event of a collision.

Standard units

Standard units are supplied completely assembled including Holding Down Bolts and Plywood Boards which enables the main contractor to accurately locate the unit in the concrete edge beam shuttering.

Resin fixed units

Resin fixed units are supplied when over coring existing anchorages or placing anchorages in an existing structure. This method is used for refurbishment schemes or incorrectly cast cradle anchorages.

Pull tests

Where the integrity of existing anchorage units is unknown, Pull-Tests can be carried out to the required load to verify their capacity.

With a corrugated steel beam at its core and clad in timber, the systems provide containment levels ranging from N2 to H2. Across the GRP, G2M, G4M and GH2 product families, we offer an extensive selection of working widths from W1 to W7.

The Rondino range complements the Hill & Smith Flexbeam VRS and provides an effective alternative where a more natural aesthetic is required to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The systems are fully compatible with our P1, P2 and P4 terminal solutions, which can also be powder-coated to match the timber finish.

Manufactured using sustainably harvested Pinus Class 4 timber and fully treated to deliver a service life of up to 30 years, the systems combine long-term durability with robust performance. The corrugated steel beam is hot-dip galvanised to ISO 1461 to ensure additional corrosion protection.

GRP Cycle Protection

The GRP product range can be configured with an optional handrail to enhance pedestrian safety. In addition, motorcycle protection can be integrated to further improve overall barrier performance

To complete the wire rope arrangement, the Brifen VRS comes with either a P1 or P4 end terminal that are tested and approved to EN1317 standards.

Brackmore (formerly Hill & Smith VRS) provide the Bri-Trans transition, an EN1317 tested and approved solution, which enables smooth integration into legacy Open Box Beam. Intermediate anchor arrangements are also available which link three-rope to four-rope wire systems seamlessly.

Brackmore Barriers (formerly Hill & Smith Barriers) have a variety of tested and approved transitions that are designed to connect two barrier types together without compromising the performance of the systems installed. Our transitions should give you confidence when installing barriers that move between containment classes and working widths. All our transitions are developed by Hill & Smith Infrastructure and are independently tested by a third party, to the British Standard, BSI EN1317.

One of our most recognisable transitions is the Tranzflex transition. This arrangement connects the Brackmore Barriers (formerly Hill & Smith Barriers) Vehicle Restraint Systems with the Varley & Gulliver Bridge Parapets. The Tranzflex transition has been used widely across the UK on many major projects including the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and the A14 Improvement Scheme.

The Non-Connecting transition is designed to replace the use of full-height anchors. Where a length of barrier is installed adjacent to a redundant structure, that has no load-bearing capacity and cannot be moved or replaced, the Non-Connecting transition is the ideal solution. Anchored adjacent to the redundant structure, this transition is designed to redirect an impacting vehicle away from the end of the hazard.
